Properties:

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial protein synthesis intracellularly by binding on the 30-S ribosome subunits. This interferes with the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the acceptor site on the mRNA ribosome complex and prevents the coupling of amino acids to the elongating peptide chains.

Doxycycline inhibits bacteria, Pasteurella multocida, Chlamydia psittaci, Mycoplasma gallisepticum, and Mycoplasma synoviae are well sensitive to tetracyclines.

Doxycycline is quickly and almost completely absorbed from theintestine. The presence of food in the intestine has no effect on the actual absorption of doxycycline. The distribution of doxycycline and penetration of doxycycline throughout most body tissues is good.

Target Species :

Broiler chickens.

Indications :

Treatment of chronic respiratory diseases caused by Mycoplasma spp. and Escherichia coli.

Treatment of Infectious coryza caused by Haemophilusparagallinarum.

Dosage and adminsration:

Route: Orally with drinking water.

For Whole product :

133 mg of product per kg of body weight  3 – 5 days (1.3 gm / liter).

Warnings and precuations:

Due to variability (temporal, geographic) of the sensitivity of bacteria to doxycycline, it is strongly recommended to collect of bacteriological samples and to proceed to an examination of the sensitivity of the micro-organisms from animals sick of the poultry farm.

A high resistance to tetracyclines of E. coli bacteria isolated on chickens has been fixed. Therefore, the drug may not be used for the treatment of infections caused by E. coli that after a review of sensitivity.

Do not use in conjunction with bactericidal antibiotics, such as penicillins and cephalosporins.

Tetracyclines can chelate cations (e.g. Mg, Mn, Fe and Al) and this may lead to decreased bioavailability.

Contra-indications :

Do not use in cases of known hypersensitivity to tetracyclines or to any of the excipients.

Do not administer to birds with severe hepatic impairment.

Side effects:

Prolonged treatments can induce gastrointestinal disorders and the modifications of the intestinal flora.

In case of allergic reaction, the treatment must be stopped.

Withdrwal time:

Broiler chickens: 10 days.

Not authorised for use in laying birds producing eggs for human  consumption.
